Sports: moisture and extreme temperatures
The Nucleus Freedom sound processor is splash and sweat resistant. However, other Nucleus processors and external components may become damaged if exposed to moisture from perspiring or from participating in water sports. If you plan to wear your cochlear implant while exercising or playing sports, try the suggestions below.
Tips
In situations where you might perspire heavily, the best thing to do is remove the components from around your ear. If this isn’t possible, frequently wipe the area with a handkerchief or piece of dry cloth.
-
Consider wearing a body-worn processor if you plan to participate in strenuous sports or if you perspire a lot. Use a padded pouch to protect the processor from moisture or damage during active sports. Padded pouches in several colors are available for body-worn processors.
- For body-worn processors, headset cables are available that allow you to remove the behind-the-ear microphone. The cable goes directly from the processor to the coil. The user connects the Lapel Microphone to pick up the sound. The Lapel Microphone can be clipped to clothing. With nothing on the ear, moisture won’t be a problem! HS-7 (Sport Cable) is designed for those using the Spectra 22
- Use hearing aid sweat bands. The XL size will work for ESPrit 3Gs or L for ESPrit or ESPrit 22. Size M will protect microphones used with body-worn processors.
-
For Nucleus 22 Techmin microphones used with Spectra or MSP processors, try a Microphone Jacket (Z90000).
-
Use ESPrit 3G Jackets (Z60520)
-
Put a strip of moleskin (sticky on one side and soft on the other) on the headset or processor to prevent contact with moisture and for added comfort.
-
Wear a sweatband to keep moisture away from your processor. Experiment with cushioning the processor between two sweatbands or sewing a pouch onto the sweatband.
-
Create a cap with a small pocket sewn onto the outside to hold the microphone or BTE processor. The pocket will keep the external components away from your skin and protect it from perspiration.
-
Wrap plastic film around the processor or microphone to keep moisture away. Plastic wrap can work but often interrupts sound. If you need clear sound, don't block the sound intake port (the round screen) of the microphone with plastic.
Caring for wet components
If your implant’s components get wet use the Global Dry & Store Unit or a Dri-Aid Pack. If the processor is immersed in water see the processor User Manual for specific instructions.
Avoiding heat
Don’t expose your processor to extremes in temperature (below -20°C /-4°F or above 50°C /122° F). For instance, when you are outside in cold weather, keep the processor close to your body, under layers of clothing. Remember to never leave your processor in the car, especially on a hot summer’s day.
