Travel tips: air travel

Thousands of cochlear implant recipients often travel by plane without any problems. Read what some of our Nucleus recipients have to say about air travel.  And below, learn what to bring and what to expect when traveling by plane.

Getting on your way

Pack a spare speech processor in your carry-on luggage or purse. You’ll want to put your spare in carry-on luggage, because the x-ray scanners used to screen carry-on bags are weaker than those used to screen checked luggage. The higher level x-rays used for checked luggage can affect your processor or MAP.

Place your spare processor in its case or inside another bag. Switch off the processor or remove its battery compartment. The x-ray machine should not affect your MAP when the processor is turned off or the battery compartment is removed.

Never place your processor directly onto a conveyer belt at airport security. Static electricity may build up on its surface. This can corrupt a MAP. Always have your spare processor inside a case or bag.

Pack non-breakable accessories inside checked luggage, if you wish.

Airport security

Airport security metal detectors usually will not react to the metal in your implant’s speech processor. If it does, tell security that the processor is part of an implanted hearing device. Show security your Nucleus ID Card or your laminated Security Screener Info Card (product FUN494), which you can get by contacting us.

Don't worry if security needs to use a handheld wand to search you. A handheld wand will not interfere with your device.
