Connecting a TV/HiFi Cable to a TV
- Without a headphone jack
- So the entire family can listen together
The headphone jack on a TV is designed for private listening. Which means when you connect a TV/HiFi Cable (Z43135) to the headphone jack, it will turn off the TV’s speakers. If no one else wants to listen to the TV, there isn’t a problem. You simply plug the TV/HiFi Cable into the TV’s headphone jack. But if others want to listen in too, you’ll need to take some extra steps, such as those below.
Instructions
Run the signal through a stereo receiver
You can run the TV’s audio signal through a stereo receiver or tuner using a standard audio RCA cable. The cochlear implant user can then connect the TV HiFi Cable to the headphone jack on the stereo receiver. (Note: If your stereo receiver’s headphone jack has a larger, 1/4” jack, you’ll need a 3.5mm mini stereo adapter to connect the TV/HiFi Cable.) The rest of the family will continue to hear the TV through its speakers.
- Insert one end of standard audio RCA cable into the “audio out” on TV.
- Insert other end of RCA cable into an unused input socket on receiver, such as one for tape, CD, or auxiliary.
- Turn on receiver, and select tape, CD, or auxiliary, depending on where you connected RCA cable.
- Connect TV/HiFi Cable to receiver’s headphone jack.
Connect the TV/HiFi Cable to the TV’s “audio out”
Another way to make it possible for everyone to hear the TV (or to use a TV that doesn’t have a headphone jack) is to connect the TV/HiFi Cable to the TV’s “audio out” jack. Others will hear the TV through the TV’s speakers, while you hear the TV through the TV/HiFi Cable. You’ll need a double female connector and an audio RCA cable with a male 3.5mm plug on one end and a standard RCA connector on the other end.
- Attach double female connector to the 3.5mm plug on the RCA cable.
- Connect RCA cable to “audio out” on TV.
- Connect TV/HiFi Cable to remaining female connector on end of RCA cable.
- Cochlear implant user can adjust the sound using the volume control on the TV HiFi cable.
Note: The TV’s volume can be controlled with the volume control on the TV/HiFi Cable as well as with the volume control on the TV.
