Ask Linn - Service Contract

1) What is the difference between a Warranty and a Service Contract?

All new processors include a manufacturers warranty that covers repair or replacement for normal use of the equipment. The warranty period for a new processor is three years.

At the end of the warranty period, one can purchase a service contract, which extends the warranty coverage for the term of the service contract. Service contracts can be purchased for one or two year terms. The service contract fee can be paid in a single payment or one can select the installment plan that is broken down into quarterly payments.

Note: Medicare Part B and some Medicaid plans provide coverage for repair and replacement after the manufacturer’s warranty coverage ends. We are prohibited from providing a service contract to individuals who are already covered by Medicare Part B or Medicaid as this duplicates benefits for which they are already entitled.

If you are a Medicaid beneficiary and you aren’t sure if your state covers repairs or replacements, contact your audiologist or Cochlear’s Reimbursement Dept. for more information: 1-800-633-4667

2) What is the difference between a service contract, a rider on my homeowners insurance and an ESCO policy?

If you wish to be protected against events not covered by a service contract such as accidental damage, theft or loss, this protection can be purchased through a company called ESCO - Ear Service Corporation or through some homeowners’ policies. ESCO offers the Protection Plus plan for cochlear implant processors and covers theft, loss and accidental damage. ESCO does not cover repair or replacement due to normal wear and tear and they may limit the number of claims paid. Malfunction of cochlear implant components due to normal use is the most common occurrence and is only covered under Cochlear’s service contracts.

Those with a Homeowners policy can also check to see if coverage is available for loss or accidental damage under their plan or through purchase of a “rider”. Check with your insurance provider for more information or get more details about ESCO Protection Plus Plan at www.earserv.com

Medicare Part B and some Medicaid plans cover replacement due to loss or theft. Check with your audiologist or Cochlear’s Reimbursement Dept. if you a Medicare or Medicaid beneficiary and have questions about these benefits.

3) Does my Service Contract carry over when I upgrade to the newest technology processor?

No. Service contracts are not transferable to upgraded sound processors. If you are participating in a trade-in program, any payments you have made on a service contract for the traded processor will be refunded or credited effective the date the trade-in is received by Cochlear Americas.

The new technology sound processor includes a three year warranty. When the warranty ends, those who are eligible for a service contract can again purchase extended coverage.
