Baha FAQ Sound and Sound Quality
Sound Quality
How will I be able to locate the direction of the sound when the Baha sound processor transmits sound to both inner ears?
With only one sound processor and equal hearing in both ears, this can be a problem whatever type of hearing aid you wear. You lose your directional hearing, which means that you can’t always be sure where the sound comes from. You get the feeling that all sound comes from the side where the sound processor is fitted.
When I hear sound with my sound processor, but why can’t I locate where the sounds come from?
You probably have just one sound processor and a hearing loss on the other side as well. This means that you are mono listening, whereas normal hearing is stereo listening i.e. with both ears. Depending on the hearing of the other ear, you may be helped with a bilateral fit of Baha sound processors. There are no other solutions to this problem.
I think there is too much wind noise in the sound processor. What can I do about this?
Wind noise is often problematic for sound processors such as the Baha. It is difficult to hide a microphone from wind noise and at the same time make it possible to pick up the sounds that you want to hear. A thin pad of foam rubber can be placed over the microphone to improve the situation.
Can I have the sound adjusted in the sound processor, even if I have had it for a while?
Yes, of course. Your hearing might have changed over the years. Try to figure out which sounds you would like to hear more of, and what type of sounds disturb you when you try listening with your sound processor on. This information is important for the person who will adjust your sound processor. And a new audiogram is also recommended..
Why do I get an echo sound in my sound processor when I turn it on?
Poor sound quality can be caused by dirt in the abutment. Start by cleaning the abutment. If you use an O-ring and insert, change these too. An echo sound can also appear if you turn the sound processor on too loud. Try to turn the volume down slightly.
I have had my Baha sound processor for six months now. I heard much better in the beginning. Why?
Make sure you have a fresh battery in the sound processor. What happens if you raise the volume? Contact your audiologist if you can’t make any improvement by yourself. A new audiogram could confirm any changes to your hearing.
Why does the sound processor whistle when I take it off?
The reason is feedback. Amplified sound leaking out from the sound processor is picked up by the microphone and amplified again and again. This makes the whistling sound. Turning the sound processor off before removing it will solve the problem.
Why do I hear a strange whistling noise when I adjust the volume ?
Try not to touch the sound processor anywhere other than on the volume control. If the problem only occurs when you adjust the volume it’s probably your hand or fingers coming close to or touching the microphone. This causes feedback i.e. sound from the sound processor leaking out and being forced into the microphone by your fingers.
Or you may be pushing too hard on the sound processor when you adjust the volume; the pressure from your fingers presses the shell of the sound processor against the vibrator inside. The result is a whistling noise that we call feedback.
If you try to adjust the volume but can’t get enough without the whistling sound, (when you have checked that your fingers are not touching the sound processor) you should contact your audiologist for help.
Why do I get a whistling in my sound processor when I put on a hat?
See the previous answer about ‘whistling’ when adjusting the volume. No matter what it is, fingers or hats, if you cover the microphone you can easily cause feedback. Try to turn the volume down or turn the sound processor off.
