Ask Linn: Tips for Music Appreciation

Everyone is asking: Now that I have my cochlear implant, how can I increase my appreciation for music?

Music is a complicated mixture of sounds so it can be difficult for the brain to sort things out in the beginning.  This is why it is often suggested that we start with simple music that contains a single voice or musical instrument.  For those who have a previous memory of music, it will also help to begin with songs that are very familiar.  Having the lyrics handy can also help us identify the song as it plays.

Here are some simple reminders for Nucleus users who are interested in developing musical listening skills:

  • Have realistic expectations
  • Understand that music may take time and effort
  • Be willing to experiment with a variety of the tips shown in this article
  • Be patient. The rewards will be well worth the time and effort
  • Practice listening often

Tips for getting started

It is also important to wait until you are comfortable hearing speech and environmental sounds with your cochlear implant. Music contains elements that are more challenging for the brain to interpret. You will have better results with music if you are accustomed to hearing everyday sounds before you tackle the more difficult listening situations

Cochlear implant users can do a number of different things to help themselves prepare for this task.
