More About SmartSound 2
Better Hearing in more everyday listening environments
We live in a world rich in sound but not all listening situations are the same. For those with hearing loss, crowds, cafes, music, and daily life can all present their own challenges. SmartSound, unique to the Nucleus® Freedom™ processor, is the only cochlear implant technology that can adapt to these situations in the same way natural hearing does. SmartSound gives you the confidence to go more places than you ever thought possible.
How does SmartSound work?
SmartSound greatly enhances the quality of the signal presented to your central auditory system by filtering and “pre-processing” sound before the Freedom sound processor analyzes and delivers it to the hearing nerve. Other sound processors that do not incorporate input processing send both good and bad sound information to the implant regardless of the listening environment. With the push of a button, SmartSound users can enhance desired sounds while eliminating the sounds they don’t want to hear. Some implants rely on “automatic gain control” to reduce very loud sounds, but “gain control” does nothing to optimize desired sounds. By utilizing SmartSound2, Nucleus Freedom’s “intelligent” sound processor automatically identifies important sounds, allowing you to focus on the things you want to hear, no matter what environment you are in.
What is input or pre-processing and why do I need it?
Typically a person with a severe to profound hearing loss loses the natural ability to filter out unwanted sounds. Pre-processing very effectively replaces the damaged cochlea’s natural filtering system allowing you to hear better in any sound environment. Pre-processing (Input processing) is not new – if you have worn a hearing aid before, chances are you’ve used input processing technology before. Hearing Aid companies have been perfecting input processing technology for years. Cochlear is the only cochlear implant company that has been able take this technology, enhance it, and incorporate it into cochlear implant processors- we call it SmartSound.
