Who's Who: Mark Doshier
Meet Mark Doshier
Regional Volunteer Manager
My name is Mark Doshier and I live in McKinney, Texas (a suburb of Dallas).I work for Cochlear as a Regional Volunteer Manager.
I was identified in high school as having a mild hearing loss.My hearing loss slowly progressed over the next 15 years until finally I was really struggling to remain a part of the hearing world.
I am a 2002 Bi-lateral Cochlear Implant recipient.I have had huge success with my implants. This product has profoundly changed my life. My passion for this product is genuine and I share many of the same hearing related life paths that either you or someone close to you have experienced.
I received Freedom in January 2006 as a part of the clinical research to make Freedom available to Nucleus 24 recipients. I can tell you first hand that Freedom is unbelievably AMAZING. Frankly, more amazing that I ever expected! My hearing performance has improved. This alone is AMAZING since I was fortunate enough to hear and perform really well and I was really happy with my 3G’s.
Here are some of my observations about my Freedom (bilateral) experiences in the first few weeks.
- I am proud to let you know that I experienced little to no transition period when I switched to Freedom.
- I hear more. I do sense that I am hearing more sound and I like it!
- I am hearing things I did not hear before and I hear everything more crisp and clearly.
- Just prior to getting Freedom my wife had been telling me that she was hearing something on the roof of our home that did not sound normal. I checked this out and could not hear what she was telling me about but my guess was that the rotating vent of the roof was squeaking. When I got home the first night with my new Freedom’s I was in the bathroom on the first floor of our home and guess what? I heard the sound my wife described through the first floor, second floor and attic ceilings and I was right. The air vent some 30 feet from me which three ceiling separated us was squeaking and I could hear it as clear and as natural as I could hear anything.
- Background noise has changed a great deal. Prior to my Freedom’s, background noise was more like static or white noise. With my Freedom’s background noise is not annoying like it used to be since I am now able to tell the many sounds apart that once blended together. I was at a point long ago with my 3G’s where I asked my audiologist to turn up my sensitivity. When this occurred I was met with a lot of spitting and white noise so I did not have the sensitivity increased. When we increased the sensitivity with my new Freedom, this did not occur and the background noises (white noise) and spitting did not come back as the sensitivity on my Freedom was increased. I hope this makes sense.
- The first time I ever bathed my two-year old daughter Sarah with my processors on was the first night I had Freedom. I had the confidence to let her play and splash in the bathtub knowing that I did not need to worry about water hurting my processors. It was a joy to hear her sing and play in the tub that night and every night since with confidence that my processors were designed to withstand this normal daily activity.
- Beam. Oh how I LOVE BEAM! I went to lunch with one of our colleagues after getting BEAM programmed. I can tell you I even after studying and learning BEAM all of the months I have been with the company was in total complete awe of how this changed the noisy, abrasive and loud environment at Jason’s Deli to a peaceful calm environment in which I could hear the person that I was eating with as if we were standing in the middle of a forest with very little noise. All of those noisy, abrasive and loud noises were reduced to the point that I barely knew they were present. BEAM is really cool. Never again will loud restaurants reduce me to feeling isolated and negatively affect my ability to participate (hear) in conversations with those I am dining with.
I knew intellectually that Freedom is a quantum leap in our industry. To live and experience Freedom has far exceeded my expectations. Freedom has a whole new meaning now to me since I am living it!
Have a Great Day!
